ELIGIBILITY: The competition is open to all music majors enrolled full-time and in applied lessons during the semesters of the competition and performance. Previous winners may not enter the competition.
Competitors will enter in one of six divisions:
strings
piano/harp
percussion
woodwinds
brass
voice
Each division will hold their own preliminary round to determine the candidates to send forward to the semi-final round. The Director of Orchestral Studies, in consultation with the area faculties, shall form the preliminary judging panels and determine those that will move forward to the semi-final round
The semi-final round will be held on Friday, Nov. 3, 2023 at 7 pm in Room 101. Each division will advance a maximum of two performers to the Final Round.
FINALS: The final round for the Concerto/Aria Competition, to be presented as the CBU Student Spotlight Recital, will take place on January 19, 2024 beginning at 7:00 p.m. in Room 101. Finalists will perform complete repertoire selections with necessary cuts in accompaniment to facilitate time. Students must provide three copies of the piano accompaniment for the judges. The judging panel will consist of Dr. Moon and two guest judges. Winners will be chosen to perform with the CBU Symphony Orchestra on March 17, 2024.
APPLICATION: Applications must be submitted to Dr. Moon by October 1, 2023. Dr. Moon must approve audition repertoire before the application due date. Therefore, it is important for students to be in consultation with their applied teachers and Dr. Moon prior to submitting their application.
ACCOMPANISTS: It is the student's responsibility to procure the services and arrange for payment of an accompanist for both rounds of the competition. Participants without a pianist will be not be allowed to compete.
REPERTOIRE: Appropriate competition repertoire can include either one movement (or aria) of a multi-movement work (or opera/oratorio) or the entirety of a single-movement work. The duration of the selected repertoire must be less than 12 minutes. The participant's repertoire must be approved by the Director of Orchestral Studies by Oct. 1
MEMORIZATION: Contestants are required to memorize their repertoire for all rounds including, if chosen, guest appearances with the symphony orchestra.
