Master of Arts in Forensic Psychology (57 units)

  • Student Learning Outcomes
    • Content Knowledge and Theories consistent with the standards of APA, AAA, and ASA
    • Critical Thinking Skills: analysis and synthesis of the research literature across the behavioral sciences including psychology, anthropology, and sociology
    • Communication: speaking and writing skills; technology literacy and research skills consistent with the standards of forensic psychology
      • Conduct and write a review that summarizes part of the forensic psychology literature, applying fundamental strategies such as a thesis focus, an informative middle and an effective conclusion resulting from effective drafting, revising, and editing
      • Use and define terms and concepts of the discipline and applying them appropriately, showing a strong & direct link between concepts and assigned reading
      • Deliver effective oral presentations in a variety of communication settings, using standard diction of American English in a professional manner including dress and demeanor
      • Lead and participate effectively in group discussions, applying active listening skills and a respect for diverse views in interpersonal settings
      • Select the most appropriate sources and databases for accessing and obtaining the needed information. Examines and compares information from various sources in order to ascertain the reliability, validity, accuracy, authority, timeliness, and point of view or bias of a given source.

This course provides an introduction to legal research methods, including state and federal reported cases, digests, annotated codes, state and federal administrative regulations, and computerized legal research, as well as an introduction to the writing of case briefs and memoranda. This course is also an advanced examination of aspects of evidence acquisition, evaluation, and preservation with special consideration of the legal context including its use in the trial process. This course is designed to provide additional insights concerning the proper use of evidence and its admissibility. (3 units; Fall)

A study in the traditional and theoretical schools of criminology. Theories relating to individual abnormality and theories relating to cultural influences are examined. This course will examine elements of criminal investigation, including crime scene preservation, evidence collection and interviewing. To bring these two topics (investigation and report writing) together, students will also be exposed to various concepts of criminal law, search and seizure and police procedures. (3 units; Summer)

This course is meant to teach graduate students the fundamentals of reconstructing the serial offenders’ motives and intent through examination of psychological evidence left by perpetrators at crime scenes. Thesis/Comprehensive Exam Requirement

The Thesis is a traditional academic research paper and should be completed concurrent with the student's last semester of the program. Students should contact the program director for details regarding the selection of the committee and the procedure for approval. Students graduating from the non-thesis track will be required to successfully complete a seven (7) hour written comprehensive examination. Information regarding content and format of the examination may be obtained from the School of Behavioral Sciences.

Forensic Practicum

Students will complete a nine month practicum where they will receive practical experience and on-site supervision in a forensic setting related to their individual interests and career goals (e.g., rape crisis center, Department of Children and Family Services Counseling Center, juvenile court, metropolitan and county law enforcement agencies, probation departments, California Department of Prisons).

Practicum Admission

Students entering the two semester Practicum requirement occurring in the last year of the student's program must complete the following requirements:

    Admission to Practicum will be a faculty decision based on grades, evaluation of the Practicum application, and placement approval. A written appeal process will be instituted in the event that a student is not considered ready for Practicum
