1. What are the program’s entry dates and application deadline?
The M.S. in Education with a Reading Specialization and the Reading Certificate program typically offer a rolling admission policy, and accepts students for the Fall, Spring or Summer semesters. Students may begin the program in any semester or term.
Students are strongly encouraged to have their application files, including all needed documentation, completed at least two to three weeks prior to the start of the semester.
2. What are the Prerequisites for Credential?

3. What is the GPA/GRE requirement?
Candidates typically must have a minimum 3.0 GPA for unconditional admission, and a minimum 2.75 for conditional admission. Note: select programs have a higher minimum GPA requirement. Higher GPA requirements are specified within the degree requirements or available through the Graduate Admissions Office for more information.
4. How long does the program take?
This program can be completed in two years by taking 6 units in each of the Spring, Summer and Fall terms. Please contact the graduate program advisor at the Metcalf School of Education or attend a Graduate Program Information Session for more detailed program completion details.
5. Can I work full time while enrolled in the program?
Yes, many students who complete the Reading Specialization and Reading Certificate are working teachers. Students should be aware that they will be required to complete fieldwork during their course of studies.
6. When do classes meet?
Graduate courses at CBU are designed to accommodate the busy schedules of working adults. Most classes are offered Monday through Thursday evenings.
7. Do I have to earn my Master’s to get my Reading Certificate?
No. However, students may work toward their Master of Science in Education and their Reading Certificate simultaneously, without having to complete additional courses.
8. What does the Reading Certificate prepare me to do?
The Reading Certificate from CBU is approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, and is a state-recognized credential for teaching reading in K-12. Educators with a Reading Certificate may become reading teachers or coaches in any grade K-12, start tutoring and intervention programs, or may choose to stay at their current teaching positions and implement acquired skills to their current classrooms and students. While the Certificate may be earned at the same time as a teaching credential, the Certificate is awarded after the candidate has completed three years of teaching.
9. How is the Reading Specialization different than the Reading Certificate?
The Reading Specialization is a masters-level specialized degree with an emphasis on evidence-based research and in-depth study of reading. Students pursuing the Reading Certificate are not required to complete the master’s degree, although many choose to complete both simultaneously.
