Graduate Programs in Nursing
CBU’s Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program recognizes that exceptional nurses come from a variety of working backgrounds and fields of study. The MSN program is designed for candidates who hold a bachelor’s degree in a non-nursing field and who seek to transition professionally into the field of nursing. Applicants have the opportunity to apply through three different entry points:
Pre-Nursing
Those who have not yet completed prerequisites for the EL (Entry Level) MSN program may apply to the graduate program at CBU to complete the necessary prerequisite courses. Admission to CBU to complete prerequisite courses does not imply or guarantee later admission to the School of Nursing.
Entry Level MSN (EL MSN)
This program is designed for those who have completed a bachelor's degree in a field other than Nursing. Those who have completed all prerequisite courses may apply directly to the EL MSN program. During this program students complete 62 units of Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) - approved pre-licensure nursing courses designed to prepare students for registered nursing licensure in the state of California.
MSN
Upon completion of the EL MSN program, licensed RNs will take an additional 28 units of post-licensure coursework to earn a Master of Science in Nursing. Students may continue coursework to complete requirements for Certified Nursing Specialist (CNS) certification.
Please Note: This phase of the program is also open to non-CBU students who already hold a BSN degree and are practicing California-licensed RNs.
Students have the opportunity to pursue two concentrations: the Administering Nursing Services Concentration equips candidates to become effective leaders and managers within a range of healthcare systems. The Teaching Concentration prepares graduates with a specialization in adult health to teach at the community college level and in higher education baccalaureate nursing programs. Additionally, the MSN program provides a solid knowledge foundation for those graduates seeking to pursue doctoral studies.
Board-Approved Curriculum, Human-Centric Learning
The School of Nursing’s unique approach to nursing — as a means of enhancing health and quality of life as defined by each individual — is reflected in the curriculum and classroom. While emphasizing the scientific study of nursing, classes also view nursing as a human science. Consistent with CBU’s faith-based mission, the curriculum courses emphasize nursing theory as a guide for advanced nursing practice. The courses are infused with Parse’s human becoming nursing theory, as well as other nursing theories, as they apply to administering nursing services for the whole person rather than medically-based isolated issues.
Students are encouraged to select and study the theory that best reflects their individual nursing philosophy and informs their journey toward advanced practice nursing. Working closely with faculty in small supportive classes, students then develop a personalized learning experience that allows them to put their selected nursing theory into practice.
Practicum Rotations and Labs: Hands-On Experience
CBU’s EL MSN extends its uniquely holistic perspective into the clinical setting as well, with specially selected practicum opportunities that allow candidates the opportunity to practice their nursing philosophies in a variety of real-world healthcare settings, and in the service of individuals, families and communities. Practicum rotation hours are completed under the instruction and supervision of CBU’s stellar School of Nursing faculty who share the program’s human science approach to providing nursing care.
For additional hands-on experience, students also enjoy access to CBU’s state-of-the-art labs, including the Advanced Nursing Skills and Physical Assessment Labs equipped with simulation equipment, computer-assisted instruction programs and an Intensive Care Unit experience.
PLEASE NOTE: Per our clinical affiliation agreements with local hospitals, a background check and drug screening will be required prior to your first clinical experience and then annually. If a red flag occurs from either your background check or drug screening, this will result in immediate dismissal from the California Baptist University nursing programs.
