Lancers Honored in Van Dyne Gym with Four PacWest Titles
California Baptist University received four NCAA D-II Pacific West (PacWest) championship title plaques, in soccer and cross country, January 19 in the Van Dyne gym by Bob Hogue, PacWest Commissioner.
Before a season-record crowd of 1,133, the men’s and women’s soccer teams and men’s and women’s cross country teams were awarded their respective PacWest Championships.
In its inaugural season in the PacWest, the Lancers are making a splash with championship titles and are in contention for the PacWest Commissioner’s Cup.

The W.M. Keck grant will provide for the purchase of new lab equipment.
Engineering Program Receives $250,000 grant for High-Tech “Green” Lab
California Baptist University’s College of Engineering has received a grant of $250,000 from the W.M. Keck Foundation that will be used to purchase equipment and develop an advanced “green” computing, teaching and research laboratory. Read complete news release.
CBU has also received a $25,000 grant from Edison International in December. The grant is funded under Edison International’s 2011 Diversity Initiative Grant program helps to underwrite a tutoring program at Sherman Indian High School (SIHS). The grant is the second CBU has received from Edison for this program.

CBU Publications Recognized for Design by National Association
For the first time in California Baptist University history, the Banner newspaper and Angelos yearbook were selected to be included in the College Media Association’s “Best of Collegiate Design 2011”. Three CBU designs are among the top 85 showcased in the annual design book.
"I am very proud of the journalism and media students and the great achievement this honor represents," Dr. Mary Ann Pearson, Assistant Professor of Communications and Education, said.
Alumnus Andrew Hochradel ('10), received notice for two yearbook spreads. "Anthropoligic" took second place in the Academic Spread category, and "When She Met Him" captured fifth place in the the Individual Spread category. Alumnae Rachel Weinstein ('10) was honored with third place in the Newspaper Feature category with her design with "SushiSushiShushi."
The competition received more than 1,000 submissions from 74 college and universities across the country.

CBU Certifies 34 New Disaster Relief Volunteers
A second training for disaster relief workers January 14 at California Baptist University yielded 34 new volunteers to CBU’s collegiate division bringing the total to 120. Last spring, the Lancers became California Southern Baptist Convention’s (CSBC) inaugural collegiate division for disaster relief.
The day-long training session provided volunteers with a Biblical perspective on disaster relief, standard procedures in a variety of cleanup scenarios, an introduction to chaplaincy and more.
Instructors included: Don Hargas, CSBC Disaster Relief Coordinator; Kristen White, Director of Global Mobilization; Jared Dobbins, Assistant Director of Global Mobilization; and Eydie Miskel, CSBC Disaster Relief Chaplain and former member of the CBU Board of Trustees.

Dr. Sands and Dr. Linn Carothers, Professor of Mathematics, and two co-authors presented at the 10th Annual International Conference on Education January 7 in Honolulu, HI. The presentation was titled, “Health Status of Taxi Drivers in Jilin, China. Co-authors included Jin Shu, Bo Hua Hospital; and Charles Sands III, Samford University, Dr Chuck Sands’ father. |

Dr. Andrew Herrity, Dean of the School of Business, made a presentation to the “Riverside Technology CEOs Forum” January 3. He spoke on the fall 2011 Business Idea Competition at CBU. The technology CEOs requested the presentation to consider the CBU experience as a possible model for other similar events in the City of Riverside. Dr. Herrity’s presentation was received with enthusiasm, and there was great interest in the winning student idea of combining existing technologies to create a parking space finder at considerably lower cost than existing products. |

Sheri Torelli, secretary for the Office of the Registrar, co-authored a book, with Emilie Barnes, titled, 365 Ways to Organize Everything. Published January 1 by Harvest House Publishers, it is Torelli’s fourth book and her third in partnership with Barnes. |

Susan Nelson, Assistant Professor of Nursing, presented at the Elsevier/Mosby's Faculty Development Institute January 2-4 in Las Vegas. Nelson’s poster, on student directed high risk scenarios, was among the top five submissions selected for presentation. The conference also featured a live webcast with online participation.

Professor Russell Baker, Assistant Professor of Kinesiology, and Adam Cady, Head Athletic Trainer, recently published a collaborative article in the January 2012 International Journal of Athletic Therapy and Training. The article titled, “Repetitive Nonunion Fracture of the Tibia and Fibula in a Soccer Player,” pgs. 29-35, was authored by Baker, R.T., Sanchez, B.J., Cady, A.C., & Zinder, S.M.

Dr. Deron Walker, Associate Professor of English, authored an article in the December 2011 edition of New Horizons in Education. The article is titled, "How to Teach Contrastive (Intercultural) Rhetoric: Some Ideas for Pedagogical Application, pgs.71- 81. New Horizons in Education is published in 130 nations accessed by 710 universities worldwide and listed with ERIC, EBSCO, AERA, LLBA, SCOPUS and other indexes.
Walker and his wife, former Ramona High School math teacher, Sounghwa Walker, co-authored and presented two papers January 6 at the 10th Annual Hawaii International Conference on Education in Honolulu. One paper is titled, “The Effectiveness of Empowering Care from College English to High School Math: Student Empowerment and Achievement as Measured by Course Evaluations and District-wide Tests.” The second paper is titled, “Empowering Care in an Inner-city Math Classroom, Revisited: Teacher Expectation, Student Achievement, and Standardized Instruction.”

Free Birthday Pastry Offered to CBU Employees
A free pastry from Wanda’s is offered to all CBU faculty and staff on their birthday courtesy of Provider Contract Foodservice. No proof is required. If your birthday falls on the weekend, you may claim your birthday pastry the following Monday.
Free Fitness Evaluations Available
The KIN 480 class is seeking CBU faculty and staff volunteers to participate in free fitness evaluations, giving students real experience in assessment and prescription.
How does the program work? Each participant will be matched with a student, and must agree to meet a minimum of four times for approximately 30—45 minutes. During these sessions, participants will be assessed in the following areas: body composition, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility and cardio-respiratory fitness.
A free exercise assessment, and a plan tailored to each individual will be completed by the end of the semester. All plans will be reviewed by faculty to ensure safety. This is an educational experience for the student and valuable for their development as a kinesiology professional.
The offer is limited to the first 30-35 volunteers. If you are interested, please contact Dr. Trevor Gillum, Assistant Professor of Kinesiology, by January 25 at tgillum@calbaptist.edu.
