California Baptist University’s Shelby and Ferne Collinsworth School of Music offers one of the most progressive music programs on the West Coast. The music major instills students with a foundation for lifelong growth and discovery in music—and in life.

Contemporary conservatory style

CBU’s music classroom style is often referred to as conservatory—intimate, challenging and rigorous—but unlike typical music conservatories that preserve the past with a traditional repertoire, CBU’s music is forward-looking to engage both musicians and audiences in the contemporary enjoyment of the art. The school’s musical philosophy is driven by the idea of making connections: between the music and the performer, the performer and the audience.

State-of-the-art technology

CBU music students work hands on with the latest music technology on both their personal Macbook Pro computers and in computer labs and classrooms located within the state-of-the-art Hawkins Music Building. Software for professional and audio production, sequencing and publishing quality notation are used each day in many of the core music courses.

Wide ranging performance opportunities

CBU music students have the opportunity to share music in a number of venues ranging from intimate church sanctuaries to celebrated concert halls. And with each performance, they develop the charisma to communicate personally with the audience and take them to a higher level of self-discovery and awareness.

A study of various piano skills and of the early-intermediate level of piano literature. This class is geared towards the student with little or no keyboard experience, emphasizing note-reading, counting, keyboard orientation, scales, arpeggios, chord progressions, harmonization, and performance of easy pieces.
