About the Program
School Counselor Committed To Student Success
Accredited by the California Commission on Teaching Credentialing (CTC), CBU’s Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) Credential in School Counseling prepares students to pass the standardized School Counselor Examination (ETS/PRAXIS II) and advance in a career as a school counselor in a public school or other educational setting. Graduates of the program earn their Master of Science and PPS Credential simultaneously.
Developed and taught by practicing school counselors and offered through CBU’s highly respected Dr. Bonnie G. Metcalf School of Education, the PPS Credential Program in School Counseling equips professionals with the skills, knowledge and experience to become effective advocates, collaborators and leaders committed to helping today’s diverse students and schools succeed.
Designed to meet the exacting professional practice standards of the CTC and Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), the PPS program’s curriculum engages students in academic excellence. Adopting the model established by the American School Counselor Association, the program’s comprehensive curriculum prepares graduates to excel in their practice and profession, as well as in their calling to improve the lives of students.
Counselors Prepared To Make a Difference
Graduates of the program acquire the evidence-based skills and knowledge to collaborate effectively with teachers, parents, administrators and community members to overcome barriers to students’ academic, emotional and social success. Graduates emerge well prepared to evaluate and improve learning environments, counsel students and their families to resolve problems and manage crises that impact their learning, design intervention programs for at-risk students, and promote safe learning environments where every student has equal opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.
In keeping with CBU’s faith-based mission, the PPS in School Counseling program focuses on developing professionals with outstanding moral character and ethical behavior. Graduates of the program share a sense of purpose and commitment to recognize and realize the potential of every child and student — regardless of culture, background and demographic.
Expert Faculty with Real World Experience
CBU’s PPS in School Counseling combines an in-depth exploration of theoretical concepts and research, with practical opportunities to implement them. Students complete intensive fieldwork that allows them to gain invaluable first-hand experience working with children and schools. Inside the classroom, faculty bring their knowledge as working professionals. Leading the faculty is the program coordinator, a Licensed Marriage, Child and Family Therapist, credentialed School Psychologist and a Psy.D. in Educational Psychology with 14 years working experience as a school counselor. CBU students benefit directly from this expertise.
