Tell me a little bit about yourself.                                                                     My name is Hector Luis Sanchez, currently I am pursuing a Master Degree in Sports Management as well as coaching baseball for Riverside City College as there Strength and Conditioning Coach.

How often do you exercise?                                                                            I take my workout habits a little bit to the extreme, usually I workout approximately six days out of the week with a one day gym rest. The one-day I don’t go to the gym I usually play sports or do outdoors activates.

What motivates you to exercise on a regular basis?                                      First, overall health is important. Second, I am an extremely competitive person who challenges myself to achieve different fitness goals every day. Third, for me fitness is a lifestyle and I enjoy every second of it.

What lifestyle changes have made the greatest impact on you?                    Running long distance has impacted my lifestyle completely, it helps me relax and focus more on my academics.

How has the Rec Center affected your life since it opened (if applicable)?      I have found the Recreation Center to be a place of peace and tranquility. Working out takes me to a different level and the atmosphere in the facility helps with the process.

What major changes have you seen since you have started exercising? Physically there have been many changes. However, the greatest change is the ability to relax and to find satisfaction after every workout.

If we were to find you in the Rec Center, where would you be?                      I will be found somewhere in the facility taking advantage of all the great stuff that it has to offer. I feel like a kid with a new toy, so I have to go out and play.

What is your favorite quote or scripture?                                                         It is something that I use everyday after all my health quotes that I post on my Facebook. “Stay Healthy My Friends”

What is your favorite exercise?                                                                        All of them, the more different the better. New is good.

What is your fitness goal?                                                                               Do everything to the best of my ability and make sure I enjoy every second of the workout.

How do you overcome stress in daily life?                                                       Putting on my workout gear, selecting a great music station and working out. Finally, I just let the process take care of itself.

What is one consistent healthy habit you have?                                              Workout consistently because the food out there in the world is amazing and I can’t say no.

Tell me a little bit about yourself.                                                                  My name is Marie Copak and I am junior. My major is Exercise Science and I plan on being a Physical Therapist.

How often do you exercise?                                                                            I try to go as often as I can, but with a busy schedule I usually am able to do 3-4 days for a solid hour.

What motivates you to exercise on a regular basis?                                     The amazing energy boost I have after a good workout is my favorite part. Also I am a competitive person, so I make it a challenge to push myself further with each workout.

What lifestyle changes have made the greatest impact on you?                 Watching what I eat and combining it with exercise has helped me knock off that freshman fifteen, and then some!

How has the Rec Center affected your life since it opened?                       I began to start working out because of the Group Fitness classes that the Rec Center provides. Not only did I find a love for exercise, but they helped me gain confidence to try new equipment and change up my workout routines.

What major changes have you seen since you have started exercising?   If I work out in the morning I find that I have a lot more energy to get me through my classes. I also find that exercise has helped stay motivated to change my eating habits as well.

If we were to find you in the Rec Center, where would you be?                  I am usually on the treadmill or lifting weights!

What is your favorite quote or scripture?                                                      I have the verse 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 above my mirror as a reminder that my body is a temple and I must fill it with good nutrition and keep it strong with exercise for God.

What is your favorite exercise?                                                                       My favorite exercise has to be running. With running I feel accomplished every time I beat my time or am able to go an extra mile

What is your fitness goal?                                                                               My fitness goal is just to be as active as I can, and make fitness a lifestyle change for the long run.

How do you overcome stress in daily life?                                                    When I am stressed I like to make a cup of tea, or two, and just watch Netflix or even go for a walk up Mt. Rubidoux.

What is one consistent healthy habit you have?                                          Drink plenty of water! I make sure I always have a bottle of water with me where ever I go.

Spotlight_Member_February_2015_Taylor_Allen.jpg

Tell me a little bit about yourself.
My name is Taylor Allen and I am an admissions counselor at CBU. I originate from Santa Cruz California where I grew up playing in the ocean and hiking in the Mountains. I moved to Riverside two years ago when I got married to my wonderful wife Lauren. We have a tiny dog named Abby…she’s my best friend. My favorite pastime is going to the movies or discovering new recipes to cook my wife for dinner.

How often do you exercise?
I try to exercise four to five times a week.

What motivates you to exercise on a regular basis?
My biggest motivation is my faith. I want to be fully equipped at any given moment to go where God leads. This responsibility requires a healthy life style involving physical fitness and exercise.

What lifestyle changes have made the greatest impact on you?
I used to drink diet soda constantly because it tastes fantastic! Many people would tell me that it is much worse for you than regular soda which never made sense to me. I eventually started to feel “off” at times and decided I needed to take a break from all forms of soda; diet and not. Since then I honestly feel so much better. I’ve replaced many of my soda urges with water and feel vastly more fulfilled without that empty feeling I used to get with soda. This has been a great lifestyle change that I am excited to continue.

How has the Rec Center affected your life since it opened (if applicable)?
I am no longer without an excuse to exercise because it is located at the same place I work. But this is a great thing! I love my time at the rec center because it either prepares my day, or more often, helps me wind down from my day. I am so thankful for the convenience of such an encouraging environment with state of the art equipment.

What major changes have you seen since you have started exercising?
I like to think I’ve noticed some inches around the waste diminish, but who knows if that’s true. Honestly I just feel better about my days. I notice that I am quite a bit more alert when I exercise and ultimately feel healthier. God has blessed each of us with specific and unique bodies and it is exciting to know that by exercising, they will perform better, allowing God to use us to the best of our ability.

If we were to find you in the Rec Center, where would you be?
Ever since a recent knee injury, I have loved the high incline treadmill, so chances are you will find me there. Otherwise I have been enjoying doing various H.I.I.T. workouts in one of the Group X rooms.

What is your favorite quote or scripture?
The Lord your God will circumcise your hearts and the hearts of your descendants, so that you may love him with all your heart and with all your soul, and live.
Deuteronomy 30:6

What is your favorite exercise?
Running

What is your fitness goal?
My fitness goal for this current year is to run a mile. I know that sounds a bit lame, but I have not been able to since last summer with my knee injury.

How do you overcome stress in daily life?
I usually take a minute to myself to gather my thoughts and wrestle through some of the endless “stress relieving remedies” we are all familiar with. I then realize that the only real way to overcome stress is to lay it down before the Lord. I also really enjoy exercising when I’m stressed, because it takes my mind off those things.

What is one consistent healthy habit you have?
I consistently try to find new ways to encourage those around me. Whether at work, home, or in my small group, there are always ways to spur on the people that the Lord has placed around you to do their best and care for them well.

Tell me a little bit about yourself.
So I'm originally from Baltimore Maryland and moved out to California for High School and college. I major in business and have been working at the Rec Center for about a year now.

How often do you exercise?
I do my best to exercise several times a week, every day if I can!

What motivates you to exercise on a regular basis?
I love exercising because it keeps my body healthy and allows me the opportunity to grow stronger as well.

What lifestyle changes have made the greatest impact on you?
Being a Christian has been my biggest lifestyle change by far, but exercising comes in at a close second!

How has the Rec Center affected your life since it opened (if applicable)?
The Rec Center has affected my life because it is a top notch facility super close to me and it allows me to work out more regularly.

What major changes have you seen since you started exercising?
When I first started exercising I was recovering from a severe arthritic illness and it has helped my body become stronger and healthier!

If we were to find you in the Rec Center, where would you be?
I will almost always be found in the weight room.

What is your favorite quote or scripture?
"So be sober, watch and pray--and the enemies will do nothing to you" - Saint Theophan the Recluse

What is your favorite exercise?
My favorite exercise is definitely between bench press and squats--classic workouts

What is your fitness goal?
My overall fitness goal would be to maintain a healthy lifestyle well into my life, even when I'm an old man

How do you overcome stress in daily life?
I overcome stress by faith in my God, as well as spending time with friends and venting by lifting heavy in the gym!

What is one consistent healthy habit you have?
I would say my most consistent healthy habit is that I stay away from soda and other excessively sugary drinks. Mainly tea and water for me.

How often do you exercise?
As of the last four months, I have been exercising three days a week at the CBU Recreational Center and prior to that I have always tried to live an active lifestyle.

What motivates you to exercise on a daily basis?
My family, especially my six grandchildren!!! I cannot lie, my real motivation comes from my handsome husband who likes to workout and likes that I would join him or at least be at the gym working out too.

What lifestyle changes have you made?
We are making exercise a priority and are definitely making healthier food choices.

How has the Rec Center affected your life since it opened (if applicable)?
I will have to say that I am a stronger and much healthier person since committing to a regular exercise routine and especially since working out with my personal trainer. Michael has been a source of great encouragement and positive motivation.

What major changes have you seen since you started exercising?
I have more energy and like knowing that I am staying committed to the goal that I set for myself. I am just starting to see outward evidence of all the hard work. Yeah!!!

If we were to find you in the Rec Center, where would you be?
All over on Monday nights, wherever Michael makes me be on Wednesdays, and in Kristi’s Kickboxing class on Fridays. I try and begin or end every workout by walking a prayer mile on the roof.

What is your favorite quote or scripture?
My favorite scripture is Philippians 4:8. “Finally brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things”.

What is your favorite exercise?
WOW…not sure I have ever been asked this question before. I would have to say the row machine.

What is your fitness goal?
My fitness goal is to lose fifteen pounds and these things on my body called love handles. Not so lovely!

How do you overcome stress in daily life?
I try to daily, several times a day to commune with God. He is my Rock. I tend to avoid living a stressful lifestyle as I know that is not the life God intended for His children. I also do the best I can at getting seven hours of sleep every night.

What is consistent healthy habit that you have?
I choose to get up and be happy everyday and try to pray for someone specific each day.

Stephanie_Spotlight_Newletter.jpg

Tell me a little bit about yourself.
I am 21 years old and a senior nursing student, graduating in May! I work as a Facility Lead at the CBU Recreation Center, and I am also part of the Childcare Team at Sandals Church on Wednesday nights. On Sundays, I volunteer with Flip Flops at Sandals with babies (0-6 months) before attending service. I am the executive treasurer for the Students of Nursing Association (SONA) club on campus. Between all of these things and studying for classes, I have very little free time, but I try to go home every weekend to spend time with my parents and play with my puppy, Zeus.

How often do you exercise?
I try to exercise for at least an hour every week day, whether it’s doing cardio, lifting weights, or both. Taking Group X classes is also a fun way for me to change up my workouts. I usually take weekends off for my body to recover and prepare for the next week.

What motivates you to exercise on a regular basis?
Motivation to exercise is very little for me. It’s usually my roommate who encourages me to go workout with her. My stress level is very high, so if I have a bad or hectic day, it makes me feel better to sweat it off. I love the feeling of hitting a PR for a new weight, and I am constantly challenging myself to do new things and lift heavier.

What lifestyle changes have made the greatest impact on you?
Cleaning up my diet and watching what foods I put into my body has been a huge lifestyle change for me, but is one of the best things I have done for myself. I used to sleep ALL the time because unhealthy foods made me feel lousy and fatigued. Now I am less bloated, take less naps, and sleep better at night.

How has the Rec Center affected your life since it opened (if applicable)?
The Rec Center has changed my life since it opened, mostly because I work there. However, before it opened, I didn’t exercise at all, and now I make it a habit. The staff are so friendly, uplifting, and encouraging. The full time staff promote wellness not only physically, but mentally, emotionally, and spiritually as well.

What major changes have you seen since you have started exercising?
Since I have started exercising consistently in January, I have lost over 10 pounds and have dropped 2 pant sizes. I feel healthier, have more energy, and am less self-conscious about my body.

If we were to find you in the Rec Center, where would you be?
In the Rec Center, I can usually be found in 3 spots: lifting weights on the machines, on the treadmill or stair-stepper, or in the cycle room. When there are not a lot of people in the cycle room, I like to go up there to do HIIT (high intensity interval training).

What is your favorite quote or scripture?
My favorite Bible verse is Matthew 6:34: “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.” Each day has enough trouble of its own. I tend to worry about the tasks in my future more than the tasks that are right in front of me, so this verse is always a constant reminder to live in the present rather than the future.

What is your favorite exercise?
My favorite muscle group to workout is legs, even though I can’t walk for two days afterwards. I love doing squats and deadlifts to workout my hamstrings and lower back.

What is your fitness goal?
My fitness goal is to become stronger and faster, and feel more comfortable when I look in the mirror. I am learning to be patient with physical changes and to focus on my worth and loving my body rather than how society thinks I should look.

How do you overcome stress in daily life?
Stress is abundant in my life and exercise has been a huge factor in keeping me sane. I also go to Sandals Church every Sunday to fill my tank spiritually (this is huge for me). I surround myself with supportive and uplifting people who encourage me in every aspect of my life, and vent when I need to rather than letting my stress build up.

What is one consistent healthy habit you have?
One consistent healthy habit I have is drinking water. I try to drink at least a gallon a day to keep my kidneys functioning well and to stay hydrated, especially during this extreme heat.

Teena_Spotlight.jpg

Tell me a little bit about yourself.
I have been blessed to work with the Undergraduate Admissions team here at CBU as an Admissions Secretary for the past 3 ½ years.  My husband and I have two grown children, a son and a daughter, and we have made Riverside our home for 20 years.

How often do you exercise?
I exercise at the Rec Center for an hour 2-3 times per week after work, and I occasionally walk for 30 minutes at lunch with co-workers.  On the weekends, my husband and I often ride our bikes to enjoy a meal out, and we walk a 2-mile loop around our home.  As much as possible, I try to make physical activity my fun time.

What motivates you to exercise on a regular basis?
Encouragement from my personal trainer, Taylor, and my husband (who meets me at the Rec Center) definitely helps keep me accountable to exercise, but mostly I am motivated by the way I feel after!  Sometimes I don't feel like going to the Rec Center, but remembering how much stronger it makes me physically, mentally and emotionally gets me there.

What lifestyle changes have made the greatest impact on you?
PLANNING my exercise and healthy food choices!  The older I get, wellness needs to be a discipline in my life.  Being as strong and healthy as I can is not just going to happen.  I have cut out processed foods and sugar as much as possible, and I now eat to live...not live to eat. :)

How has the Rec Center affected your life since it opened (if applicable)?
It has put wellness on the map for me!  I have been motivated and encouraged; I've received training to know how to workout safely, regularly, and with goals; I've had fun and have laughed with my trainers and class instructors; and I've been introduced to Necessary Nutrition at a Lunch-and-Learn.  The Rec Center is a true blessing in my life!

What major changes have you seen since you have started exercising?
I have stopped the gain-10 lbs-each-year cycle! Praise the Lord!  I have increased strength in my muscles and in my spirit, and my doctor has cleared me as a pre-diabetic.

If we were to find you in the Rec Center, where would you be?
Either working hard with my trainer, Taylor, or in Stefani or Anthony's Steptastic Class!

What is your favorite quote or scripture?
Prov. 3: 5 & 6  "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.  In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths."

What is your favorite exercise?
I love Step at the Rec Center, and biking or hiking in nature.  This year I turned 50, and I decided to face that number instead of run from it.  I planned a 41-mile hike/walk from Topanga Canyon to Hermosa Beach over 3 days, and myself and 5 other members of my family did it!  It was one of the highlights of my life.

What is your fitness goal?
To continue to plan my wellness and increase my knowledge of how I can be in the best shape physically for me.  I'm aiming to further lower my cholesterol and possibly lose 10 more pounds in the process.

How do you overcome stress in daily life?
Pray, meditate on God's promises, sing or listen to music, do something kind for someone else, stay active, and take in the beauty of creation.

What is one consistent healthy habit you have?
Don't let bad habits take over!  I work at all of the above as needed to maintain a healthy, peaceful and balanced life.

Tell me a little bit about yourself.
I was the first in my family to graduate from college. I studied Radio, Television and Film at Biola University, received my MA in Christian Apologetics in 2000 and MBA in 2013 from Concordia. I met my wife, Megan, on a mission trip to Venezuela and have been blessed with two beautiful children, Johnmark (11) and Marian (9).

How often do you exercise?
I try to workout three times a week at the Rec Center. Having two excellent personal trainers to keep me accountable (Jonathan and Nattali) really helps me stay on track.

What motivates you to exercise on a regular basis?
I would have to say my family motivates me to work out on a regular basis. I want to have the energy to be actively engaged in my children’s lives.

What lifestyle changes have made the greatest impact on you?
I have had to cut sugar out sugar from my diet. Now, more than ever, I understand how important it is to make time for a fifteen minute workout …once a day.

How has the Rec Center affected your life since it opened (if applicable)?
The Rec Center has been an incredible blessing to me. In many ways I think the Rec Center is helping me stay balanced.

What major changes have you seen since you have started exercising?
Since I’ve started exercising, my energy level has increased and my stress level has decreased significantly.

If we were to find you in the Rec Center, where would you be?
You can probably find me on the Rowing Machine or TRX training. My trainers Jonathan and Nattali exert a great deal of mental energy thinking of new ways to challenge me to strengthen my core with a good bosu and kettle bell workout.

What is your favorite quote or scripture?
That’s easy …my favorite verse is Matthew 16:25. “For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?”

What is your favorite exercise?
My favorite exercise is TRX …the instructors are really encouraging.
