Bachelor of Science in Aviation Flight

The Aviation Flight major at CBU is designed for students who desire to fly commercially for a living. All flight training is conducted in-house by CBU using our own flight instructors and fleet of university-owned aircraft.  All flight training is based out of the Flight Operations Center at the Riverside Municipal Airport, which is less than three miles from the CBU campus. Riverside Municipal Airport offers a safe flight training environment, with two paved runways (Runway 9-27 is 5,401 feet by 100 feet and Runway 16-35 is 2,850 feet by 50 feet), numerous instrument approaches, an Air Traffic Control Tower, and local FAA Flight Standards District Office on-site. Flight training costs are in addition to CBU tuition and fees.

The Aviation Flight major has been developed to bring students in with no flight experience and allow them to graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in Aviation Flight and with a Private Pilot Certificate, Commercial Pilot Certificate, Instrument Rating, Multi-Engine Rating, and Certified Flight Instructor designation. If desired, students may also achieve the Certified Flight Instrument Instructor and Multi-Engine Instructor designations.

Graduates of the Aviation Flight major will be qualified to fly single engine and multi-engine aircraft for hire. However, to act as pilot-in-command of a scheduled air carrier's aircraft having a maximum gross weight over 12,500 pounds or having over 9 passenger seats without a type rating, the pilot will need an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate. To obtain an ATP, the pilot must be 23 years of age and have accumulated 1,500 hours total time as pilot (as well meeting some additional criteria). Generally, you can expect to graduate from CBU’s Aviation Science program as a Professional Pilot major with around 200-230 total hours of flight time. Often, graduates flight instruct for several years while they build hours to earn their ATP, and then apply for a flight slot with a regional carrier. Of course, there are flight careers that do not require an ATP, such as Business/Corporate Pilot, Missionary Pilot, Law Enforcement, etc. Each Aviation Flight major will determine the direction they would like their career to take and pursue the ratings, certificates, and hours to make that happen.

In addition to the flight training and the ground courses that complement that training, Aviation Flight majors will develop an in-depth knowledge of meteorology, avionics and navigational aids, human factors, aircraft systems (including turbine), and crew resource management. In essence, you’ll learn everything you need to know to function as a commercial pilot in the aviation industry. The Aviation Flight major requires 62 units of General Education and 54 units of major courses to total at least 124 units for the degree.

A calculus-based course including an introduction to derivatives and integrals, dimensional analysis, analytical geometry, trigonometry, vectors, experimental error and other topics to provide a mathematical foundation for natural science majors.
